6032EE Power Systems Coursework 2026: Solar Sizing, Power Plant Report and PowerWorld Load Flow (Coventry University at PSB Academy), Singapore
6032EE Power Systems Coursework 2026 (Coventry University, PSB Academy Singapore)
The 6032EE Power Systems coursework for the B.Eng. Electrical and Electronic Engineering at PSB Academy combines calculation, research and simulation across three roughly equal questions: solar PV sizing and power station load factor problems, a technical report on a power plant, and a load flow study built and analysed in PowerWorld Simulator, all written up with Coventry University Harvard referencing.
General Instructions
- Answer all three questions in a single report, in the same order, with clear headings; start each full question on a new page.
- The cover page must show the university, the course, your name, student number and submission date, and the report must include a table of contents.
- Cite references for all data, graphs, charts, figures, illustrations and diagrams taken from other sources, following the Coventry University Harvard guide.
- Prepare the report in Microsoft Word using one consistent font (Times New Roman or Arial, size 12) and submit it as a PDF on Blackboard.
Question 1 (33 marks)
- The average solar energy received by a surface over one month is 5 kWh/mΒ² per day. Explain the term solar insolation, then determine the peak sun hours for that month. (3 marks)
- A small electrical installation needs an average of 2,500 Wh (2.5 kWh) per day, and the annual solar insolation at the site is 5 kWh/mΒ² per day. Using 12 V solar panels rated at 180 W, calculate the number of panels required. (12 marks)
- A power station has a maximum demand of 12 MW, an annual load factor of 50% and a utilisation factor of 40%. Determine the energy generated per year, then find the reserve capacity of the plant. (10 marks)
- The maximum demand of a power plant is 60 MW. Calculate the installed capacity needed to give a reserve margin of 20%. (8 marks)
Question 2 (33 marks)
Prepare a report on any recent modern power plant in Europe, the USA or Australia (3,000 words Β±10%, references in an appendix not counted). Use information from electricity authorities, IEEE, IET, the International Energy Agency or similar bodies, and cite all data and figures. Suggested sections:
- Introduction (6 marks): background information on the chosen power plant.
- Electricity Generation Operation (10 marks): generation operation, installed capacity, maximum demand and reserve margin from reliable sources, presented as graphs or charts, with analysis of any generation mix.
- Choices of Renewable Energy (12 marks): facts on TWO types of renewable energy and their contribution to generation, shown in a graph or chart, plus the countryβs future renewable energy plans (also charted) with your comments.
- Summary and Conclusions (5 marks): observations, conclusions and the major features of the plant.
Question 3 (34 marks)
A three-bus power system (Figure Q3) has the following data.
| Bus | Voltage (kV) | Initial pu | Remarks |
| BUS_1 | 33 | 1 | Slack bus |
| BUS_2 | 33 | 1 | |
| BUS_3 | 11 | 1 |
| Generator | Bus | Reactance | MW (min/max) | MVAR (min/max) | AGC / AVR / Enforce MW limits |
| 1 | 1 | 0.01 | 0 / 2000 | -9900 / 9900 | Yes / Yes / Yes |
| 2 | 2 | 0.01 | 0 / 2000 | -9900 / 9900 | Yes / Yes / Yes |
| Line | Length | Parameters | Type |
| 1-2 | 20 km | R = 0.01 Ξ©/km, X = 0.015 Ξ©/km | Overhead line (admittance ignored, short line) |
| 1-3 | 10 km | R = 0.005 Ξ©/km, X = 0.001 Ξ©/km, B = 0.001 mho/km | Underground cable |
| 2-3 | 10 km | R = 0.005 Ξ©/km, X = 0.001 Ξ©/km, B = 0.001 mho/km | Underground cable |
Load: 100 MW and 50 MVAr at Bus 3.
- From the line data, theoretically find the R(pu) and X(pu) values and comment on the per-unit values obtained. (10 marks)
- Construct the network in PowerWorld using the data in Tables Q3.A to Q3.D and include the network before simulation in your report, showing voltage and phase angle at every bus and real and reactive power at both ends of every line. (12 marks)
- From the Tools menu choose Solve and perform the load flow analysis; include the simulated (or during-simulation) diagram with all field values clearly shown. (12 marks)

Set out every calculation with units and assumptions, especially load factor and PV array sizing, and include clear PowerWorld screenshots with bus voltages and line flows labelled. In the power plant section, compare efficiency, cost and environmental impact rather than only describing how the plant works.
